Michael Longley is a central figure in contemporary Irish poetry. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and a recipient of the Queen's Gold Medal for Poetry and the Wilfred Owen Award. He also won the Whitbread Prize, the T S Eliot Prize, the Hawthornden Prize, The Irish Times Irish Literature Prize for Poetry, Poetry Now Award and the Librex Montale Prize. He was made a C.B.E. in the Queen's Birthday honours 2010. In 2015 he was made a Freeman of Belfast by the City Council. He was Ireland Professor of Poetry 2007 – 2010. He is a member of Aosdána and of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
